Lyndhurst Castle
Just down the river from Kendal on Hudson, in Tarrytown, is Lyndhurst Castle, one of America’s finest Gothic Revival mansions. Its brilliant architecture is complemented by the beautiful grounds that sit overlooking the Hudson. The historic Hudson property offers a Classic Mansion Tour, perfect for first-time visitors, and two specialty tours that are recommended for returning visitors. Lyndhurst’s 67 acres of grounds are free and open for the public to explore from dawn to dusk.
Walkway Over the Hudson
A train ride on Metro North’s Hudson Line up to Poughkeepsie will bring you to the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. It’s a great day trip to share with the entire family. The park is a linear walkway spanning the Hudson, and at 212 feet tall and 1.28 miles long, it is the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world. You can casually stroll the walkway and explore on your own or schedule a guided tour with an ambassador who shares more in-depth information about the Walkway’s construction, history, reconstruction, the Hudson River, and the areas surrounding the park. The park is open from 7:00 am until dusk.
Union Church of Pocantico Hills
Love art? Then visiting Union Church of Pocantico Hills, an unassuming country church just minutes away from Kendal on Hudson, is a must. Visitors marvel at the stained glass window by Henri Matisse, his last work of art, and nine windows by Marc Chagall. Visitors are welcome to explore on their own or take a guided tour. Tours run every 1/2 hour during the week (Closed Tuesday) 11am-5pm, Saturdays 10am-5pm and Sundays: 2pm-5pm.
West Point Military Academy
Located on the shore of one of the most scenic bends in the Hudson River, West Point Military Academy is the oldest continually garrisoned post in the U.S. Army. Founded in 1778, it opened as a military academy in 1802. Some of the academies well-known graduates include Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, and Douglas MacArthur. It’s also home to the world's oldest and largest military museum. Campus visits are by bus tour only, but civilians can visit the museum and visitor center without doing the tour.
Cruise Along the Hudson
A short car ride or Metro-North trip away to Peekskill brings you to Trinity Cruise Company for a Hudson River cruise on the Evening Star. Choose from a Sightseeing Cruise that explores the Hudson Highlands from Peekskill to the West Point area, a Summer One-Hour Boat Tour or a Sunset Cruise. Tours launch conveniently from the Scenic Peekskill Riverwalk, a beautiful location in itself. You can take time to explore the park with its sculptures and beautiful views or grab something to eat at one of the nearby eateries to complete your adventure.
