Who else enjoys waking up to the alluring smell of freshly brewed coffee?

Coffee is one of those drinks that a lot of Americans can’t do without. People enjoy coffee for various reasons—it’s comforting, it keeps you awake and it’s a great social beverage.

Fortunately, your favorite beverage has many health benefits, as well. Learn more about coffee and how it can benefit your health below.

Health Benefits of Coffee

Like all things, there are positive and negative effects of drinking coffee. However, for coffee, it seems the positive outweighs the negative.

There are many health benefits, but here are three benefits we thought were the most important.

  1. Coffee can help prevent cancer.
Studies have shown that coffee can help prevent certain cancers such as endometrial cancer, oral cancer, skin cancer and lung cancer. Even though the research isn’t definitive, it does show coffee is beneficial as long as the person can metabolize caffeine.
  2. Coffee reduces the risk of stroke in older adults.
A study showed that older adults who drink more than one cup of caffeinated coffee daily reduce their chance of having a stroke by 20-25%.
  3. Reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes.
An American Diabetes Association study showed that people who drink coffee regularly have lower sugar and insulin levels.

Coffee’s Brain Boosting Perks

Do you drink coffee to give you that extra energy boost in the morning? Turns out there are brain health benefits associated with drinking coffee, as well.

  • Coffee can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s.
Studies have shown that caffeine blocks inflammation of the adenosine receptors in the brain. The adenosine receptors can start a chain reaction to begin a cognitive decline.
  • Coffee can have a positive impact on depression.
Does your mood get better as you sip your coffee? Caffeine is a psychostimulant which causes wakefulness and increases motivation. Coffee helps the brain chemical, dopamine, become more effective. That also improves motivation and helps with decision-making.
